Q. Which is second most sinful act during Ramadan which breaks the fast?

A. (#DrZakirNaik): The second most serious sin that breaks the fast is masturbation. This we get from the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “Prophet said that Allah subhanwatala said ‘all the deeds of son of Adam are for himself except for fasting it is for me and I will reward it. The person he abstains from eating, drinking and his desires for my sake’…” So this desire from where we come to know it includes doing masturbation. So when a person masturbates or ejaculates whether by touching his wife or looking at his wife or due to other reason or looking at any other woman. If the ejaculation takes place then the fast gets invalidated. He has to repent to Allah subhanwatala and complete that day of fasting and he should compensate for this fast, keep this fast later when Ramadan gets over. But here there is no Kaffara, there is no penalty. Because that penalty is only for sexual intercourse. Furthermore if a person does not ejaculate and if there is only ‘madhi’ that comes out – fluid. Then the fast does not break. Similarly this is a prostatic fluid (the madhi) and if this white fluid that may come out after urination then the fast does not break. Only thing he has to do is ‘istinja’ i.e. wash his private parts and do wudhu.

    • it is sexual-intercourse that breaks both husband and wife’s fast.

Intercourse during the day in Ramadaan is haraam for men and women alike, who are obliged to fast during the day. Doing that is a sin for which expiation (kafaarah) must be offered. The kafaarah is to free a slave; if that is not possible then the person must fast for two consecutive months; whoever is not able to do that must feed sixty poor persons

      • Assalaam alaikum,

60 poor persons for one day.

Each poor person should be fed with approx. half ‘Sah’. Each ‘Sah’ is equal to 3 times stretched hands of wheat or the food of that land. (Approx. one day’s food normally had in that land).

        —————————-
The expiation for intercourse during the day in Ramadan is one of three things, in this particular order. It is not the matter of choice, i.e., it is not permissible to move from one to another unless one is unable to do what is stipulated. They are: freeing a slave; if one cannot do that, then one must fast for two consecutive months; if he cannot do that, then he must feed sixty poor persons. It is not permissible for him to fast for two months if he can free a slave, and it is not permissible for him to feed sixty poor persons unless he is unable to do the first two actions, freeing a slave or fasting.
