Q. Is my fast invalidated if i unintentionally eat something?

Fast is not broken if one unintentionally eats or drinks while fasting

If a person eats or drinks unintentionally should complete his fast and what he has eaten and drunk is from Allah subhanwatala.” – Sahih Hadith

A. (#DrZakirNaik): If someone eats or drinks unintentionally out of forgetfulness then the fast does not break and this happens many times in first few days of Ramadan, people are so used to get up and eating or drinking water in the kitchen. So in first few days it does happen with some people that they forget and have the water or eat food not knowing that they are fasting. So in such case fast is not invalidated and one has to complete his fast. This is according to the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who said, “If a person eats or drinks unintentionally should complete his fast and what he has eaten and drunk is from Allah subhanwatala.” And our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said, “Allah subhanwatala has excused my Ummah for forgetfulness and mistakes and if something is forced on them.” So only intentionally eating or drinking breaks the fast and it is a major sin.
